DEBBIE BAISDEN

Read Stories by Debbie Baisden
Debbie Baisden is a freelance writer and self-proclaimed "church lady" who was formerly a higher education administrator and legal analyst. She and her husband, Gary, escaped the urban hubbub of Austin, Texas, a couple of years ago to live the good life in Deep East Texas (and have never looked back). Debbie is the mother of five children - ages 33 to 3 (no that's not a typo). Two of the kids (Katie, 3, and Michael, 12) are still at home, and she and Gary have three beautiful grandsons who visit often. "My house has been childproof for 30 years and apparently always will be!" says Debbie.

DR. RUTH NATHAN

Read Stories by Dr. Ruth Nathan
Parent, grandparent, wife, research scientist, main cook and usual bottle washer (even in this day and age!), Ruth continues her practice of spending one and a half days a week with her grandchildren. As our child-development columnist, Ruth's research and lecture circuit will take her from coast to coast this summer, where she'll talk with grandparents, parents, teachers, and even children about growing up. “We all continue to grow up, even as we age,” says Ruth, now sixty-three, “and listening to our grandchildren is perhaps the finest way to age with wisdom and grace.” Says her grandson, Saul, “I feel playish today, Grammy,” which means Saul needs Ruth to get down on her hands and knees and seriously save all the little characters Saul has scattered throughout the house. Wisdom, the better part of reason, gently pulls her to the carpet floor.
